I have been experimenting lately (so what's new?).
First, I tried dandelion root, b/c it is supposed to be good for many 'female' issues, and it is supposed to relieve constipation.
It works!!
However, it is quite powerful, and I would recommend it only as an occasional remedy, not as something to incorporate into daily practice. I think it will work well for travelling.
Speaking of travel and bowel issues... I have always had problems when flying, and recently learned that the upheaval (we were not meant to fly) and terrible atmosphere in airplanes are enough to block even the most stalwart of digestive systems. I learned that acidophilus is a great help with this. The procedure is simple, take some before leaving, then in mid-flight, and again once arrived at destination. I haven't flown anywhere since learning this, but will try it next time and post results.
I have been reading a book on herbal and food remedies for women heading into the premenopausal years (by Susun Weed). From it I learned about the dandelion root, as well as about some important vitamin and mineral issues. I also learned about food remedies, and got more support for my theories on links between digestive and menstrual cycle!
The author has a recipe for 'Fruit Fix" that is great for fiber, motility, and so tasty I want to eat it as dessert! It is a compote of figs, raisins, dates or apricots, and prunes and prune juice (she says use a pound of each and 8-10 cups juice, but I quartered that - it makes a lot). Simmer on low until the fruits are mushy, then blend in a food processor (or hand mash if you prefer). It is better than chocolate! (I never was big on chocolate anyway).
