December has been a health attention month. The IBS has had me in a holding pattern, with almost daily enemas. Then I hurt my back - a freak thing, just a simple movement and it was all over... As I was wondering what the third, or if there would be a third, event, I managed to have a freak kitchen accident on New Year's Eve.
I was putting away a clean and dry cuisinart blade. It slipped, dropped, bounced, and sliced my thumb open enough to require emergency room and stitches. Three. Oh, and did I mention the pain? Which was subsiding a bit, the way a paper cut will, until they reintroduced pain with the stitching (e.g. six more punctures, two for each stitch).

Yikes!

So now I have experienced the month of December, 2001.
January 2002 can only start better!
Yesterday I eliminated a bit, but still needed an assist. I must mention, however, that the two days prior were decent doodie days = no need for assist. As well, I had also returned to early morning routine, which I believe helped a lot. And, this is interesting, I did not take any fiber supplement those days and the day prior. However, I did begin to reintroduce higher amounts of magnesium (I had been taking one cap/day = 110 mg). Now I am taking 4 cap/day = 440 mg. It really helps, not just my bowel, but my skin, hair, etc.

I am learning some lessons here.
One, that the naturopath I went to last year was probably right when she said I would likely need magnesium supplements for the rest of my life b/c I was so depleted. Now, I don't necessarily need to take the megadoses of last year (at one point I was up to about 1200 mg/day, on top of the biweekly megashots). However, I need to pay attention to the magnesium-calcium balance, and I need to supplement my food intake b/c I cannot possibly eat enough food to get all the minerals, vitamins, and general nutrients I need.

So, while I would prefer to take minimal amounts of supplements, I need to gauge my body's rhythms and feed those needs. If that means a cycle of ups and downs in terms of dosages, so be it.
Sigh.

That is the second thing I have learned, that my body (just like everyone else's...) follows a rhythm or cycle and needs some nutrients more at certain seasons, less at others. Ahhh, complexity. What fun.

Whatever it takes, that is what I will do. Why? Because I am on a journey toward perfect health. Maybe someday my supplement intake will be much smaller - and at present it is considerably less than it was this time last year.

So there we are.

Other lessons/questions:
One tiny movement can wrench your back. What's with that?
What's with the 'things come in three's' rule? Where did it come from and why does it rule?
I have read about old patterns becoming entrenched at a cellular level even if one has worked on the psyche and changed, and I wonder if this month's health issues are a reflection of that?
I also wonder about the relationship between a person, her health, and her family's proximity. Why? My parents moved out here December 1. My sister and brother have come for extended visits and are here now. So, whole family presence and Laura's health decline = coincidence or cellular reaction?

I suspect there is something to the cellular pattern thing, but haven't time to do more research just now.

More important at present = the Conference is happening this weekend! I am supposed to give a cooking lesson on Saturday! Yikes! First part of lesson is now going to be safety in the kitchen! (and how you can't control for freak accidents?)

Also, it's been pointed out that reaching me online is difficult. Here is a link to dialogue: Laura at Glassbird.

Later.
