Nirvana of Peristalsis

(also known as Mike's Flog)

A Regimen for Remission
This log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my Crohn's in a drug-free remission.

Monkey-see,
monkey-don't

Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

Dinner: grilled trout with butter and pepper; cauliflower "mashed potatoes"; a small glass of amontillado.
mhs@20:32

Breakfast: an apple a banana, and some pecans.

Dinner (yesterday): Grilled fresh Pacific swordfish with butter and pepper, a tossed salad, and grilled sliced zucchini with olive oil, garlic, and a dash of soy sauce. Delicious!! Note: North Atlantic swordfish are endangered due to overfishing--please do not buy them or patronize stores that sell them. According to the NRDC, in 1960, most swordfish caught in the North Atlantic weighed over 250 pounds. Today, three decades after the emergence of an indiscriminate fishing method called longlining, the average North Atlantic swordfish caught weighs just 90 pounds. And with over half the North Atlantic swordfish caught too young to breed, the population is seriously overfished. If you want to read more about the endangered Atlantic swordfish, check out the NRDC.ORG site.

OT: there was a segment on the radio this morning about high gas prices, especially in the mid-west of the United States. Awww, do you really think gas prices are too high?

I don't. I argue that they are not high enough. If people car-pooled, timed their shopping with their daily commute, took public transportation, and oh-so much more, gas prices would lower a bit. But the real point here is that gas comes from petroleum, which is a natural resource. This natural resource, like most, is limited. And what that means, folks, is that it ain't gonna be around forever and it ought to be priced as a limited resource. Snap out of it: start car-pooling, stop running "shopping errands" in your SUV. And read page 4 of this document!
mhs@08:06

Breakfast: an apple and some dccc with mezquite honey. Belieive me, get some mezquite honey--it tastes so much better than that clover stuff! And no, it doesn't taste like that mezquite-flavored grill sauce you find in the store. Mezquite honey has a more robust flavor, and is less "sugary" than the clover honey.

Dinner: a fine middle eastern dinner at Sinbads, on University. A delicious, albeit dry roasted chicken breast, with steamed veggies. One thing I have found to be quite beneficial when eating out on the SCD is to ask "can I have double the veggies and no [starch]?" They usually have no problem with that! For dessert I had 25 cents-worth of M&M's from a gumball machine. I know, I know I'm setting a bad example for the newbies. Don't eat chocolate, you SCD-ers! Do as I say, not as I do! :-)
mhs@21:04

Lunch: all-you-can-eat Mongolian grill @ Rose Garden. It's fun for the whole family! It's healthy! It's great! And if you don't like what you get, you can only blame yourself!
mhs@13:45

Breakfast: an apple, some dry curd cottage cheese (with mezquite honey), and a banana. Notice a trend here?! :-)
There was a saying that was popular in the last century: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"; it goes for breakfast, too. Listen to your gut. Eat what works for you. And don't stress about it!

OK, so this has nothing to do with Flog or SCD, but I'm posting it here just the same. Enjoy!

DOJ announces plans to "break-up" Tiger Woods

On the heels of their victory against Microsoft, the DOJ has announced they plan to "break-up" Tiger Woods. DOJ's lead prosecutor, Joel Klein, claims Tiger uses unfair golfing techniques which stifle his competition. Klein also stated that he doesn't necessarily want to "break-up" Tiger Woods; however, if they can't find some way to handicap him enough to allow other golfers to win then there would be no other choice. Under a break-up plan Tiger Woods would have to play half his tournaments as "Tiger" and the other half as "Woods". Although this may not give other golfers an advantage it would increase the tax revenue to the government.

Tiger Woods said he plans to fight these charges. He has done nothing wrong except practice hard and play-to-win.

Mark Fitzpatrick, anti-trust expert, said, "This "play-to-win" attitude is what started all Tiger's problems. If Tiger would just allow other's to win he would not have a monopoly on the golf course. He really brought this upon himself. He should have known the government couldn't allow this much golfing power in the hands of just one person. If I was Tiger, I would settle out of court. An appropriate remedy might be that he has to wear handcuffs when driving and stand on one foot while putting."

More breakfast: scrambled eggs with scallions.

Listen To Your Gut, by Jini Patel Thompson.
Brief review by Mike Simons, 6/24/2000:
This excellent inspirational book describes a whole-body approach to overcoming Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, and IBS. Ms. Patel provides a valuable framework of diet, exercise, stress management, and herbal treatments for quick relief of symptoms; she also includes thought-provoking questions in a worksheet format for further exploration of each chapter's concepts. While the author had minimal success with the SCD, (her personal lifestyle was not compatible with spending 'time in the kitchen'--she became "an irritated, angry person") she does recommend a very SCD-like diet throughout the book. My personal recommendation is to read this book after reading Breaking the Vicious Cycle, and assimilate the best of the two books into your own natural healing methods.

We saw Disney's Dinosaur yesterday! It was really great!! While the plot was simple (made for kids), the special effects were fantastic!!! It is definitely a Disney movie; it speaks of the traditional values of love, caring, sticking together, good versus evil...

Dinner: still in Houston, tapas @ Mi Luna on University (near Rice University). Awesome! I feasted upon the ensalada de la casa (mixed greens with roasted garlic balsamic vinaigrette, tomatoes, goat cheese, and toasted pine nuts), rabo de toro a la Sevillana (braised oxtail in a Rioja wine sauce), and berenjenas a la plancha con ajo (eggplant sauteed with garlic, olive oil, and fresh cilantro). I highly recommend this place. Only areas for improvement: fewer fruitflies, and I wish my wife could have been there to dine with me!

Tuesday, June 13, 2000

Dinner: in Houston, @ Massa's. Awesome seafood. Dined on halibut with artichoke hearts, asparagus, and crab meat. Appetizer of fried calamari (not as good as Mi Cocina's in NYC) and a salad of mixed greens and endives.

Lunch: crummy salad with chicken on top from the cafeteria where I am this week.

Still on vacation, folks. Here's a brief review of recent munchings.

Dinner: @ Max's Oyster Bar, in West Hartford. Awesome pan-seared Alaskan char, with grilled fennel. An appetizer of fried calamari and some roasted asparagus. Our last fine meal in CT; off to NYC tomorrow to see Dirty Blonde and have dinner with friends.

Ran into my next-door neighbors @ dinner. Wow...
mhs@18:53

Yes, we're still on vacation, dining like kings @ Betsy and Marv's. It has been raining, quite a novelty for us desert-folk. Great weather for sleeping, reading, or browsing.

Which brings me to sixfoot6, the blog of the week. I rarely link to other blogs here, but this site is way too cool to not share with my visitors (especially since I'm not updating my site as often while on vacation). Enjoy!!

Dinner yesterday: broiled scrod, spinach, and a tossed salad. And nearly a whole piece of non-SCD approved pecan pie. Folks, don't try this at home! :-)
mhs@09:45
