A Regimen
for Remission
This
log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD
foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my
Crohn's in a drug-free remission.
Monkey-see,
monkey-don't
Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

Marc Reiser, the author of Cadillac Desert, passed away from colon cancer over the weekend; he was in his early fifties. Cadillac Desert: The American West and Its Disappearing Water, documents the history of the struggle to discover and control water in the American West. A tale of rivers diverted and damned, political corruption and intrigue, billion-dollar battles over water rights, and economic and ecological disaster. Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award.
mhs@20:47
Dinner: Laura's homemade vegetable soup of beets, carrots, parsley, and celery--awesome! That, and grilled turkey and chicken sausages, and leftover stringbeans with garlic.
mhs@20:42
Busy, busy!
Lunch: steak, peppers, and black bean burrito, sin wrapper.
Breakfast: fresh fruit.
mhs@15:56

Just FTP'd four hours' worth of updates to the SCD web site. Check them out here.
mhs@12:16
Laura has been doing a lot of yoga, and she is getting great at some of the difficult poses. I, however, have not been doing as much yoga as I should.
mhs@11:27
Breakfast: fruit and nuts.
Yesterday:
Dinner: roasted chicken, steamed artichokes and butter, and a tossed salad.
Lunch: chicken burrito, sliced lenthwise and eaten "out of its wrapper".
mhs@07:55

SCD news: check out sex and the SCD!
Employment tip of the day.
mhs@06:31
Breakfast: fruit, nuts. It's a cloudy morning here in Tucson. Oppressive humidity (44%), and 85 degrees before the sun even came up.
mhs@06:03
Wednesday, July 26, 2000
Dinner: in Houston @ Thai Cafe, on Westheimer. Awesome vegetables in a clay pot!
Lunch: @ El Charro in the Tucson Airport. Carne seca Caesar salad.
mhs@19:55
Breakfast: apples and cantaloupe. Laura and I watched three hummingbirds battle it out for our feeder this morning. They are such wonderful birds to watch! Usually, one defends the feeder from all others; this time one bird remained perched immediately above the feeder while two others battled it out, and then enjoyed the feeder to itself. Amazing. Here are more annals of natural beauty.
mhs@06:47
Tuesday, July 25, 2000
Dinner: "wilted" (sauteed) spinach with raisins, garlic, and pine nuts, leftover turkey burgers (still awful-threw the rest away), and a delicious tossed salad with flax seed oil and organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar dressing.
mhs@21:00
Netscape is cramping my style! Why can't it be as good as Microsoft's browser? And don't go telling me that IE is so good because it is tied to the operating system. As Mattl pointed out on Monday, "IE5.5/Mac is the most-compliant browser available, and you can be damn sure that it hasn't a single hook into the MacOS. Get real. While IE/Win has significant hooks into the OS, it by no means forces the user to browse, read email, or live by IE. In about 90 seconds I can open my Options dialog and be done with it. Who are you trying to kid?" Mozilla, where are you??!!
mhs@15:21
Lunch: leftover grilled sausages and oven-roasted beets, a delicious tossed salad.
mhs@12:22
Breakfast: fruit and dried figs.Dinner (yesterday): Laura's awesome braised string beans and garlic, tossed salad, and some (pitiful) turkey burgers on the grill. The regular ground turkey was sold out, so I bought the extra lean stuff. Don't do it! It is awful! It is so dry and taste-less, even with all the spices and stuff I added! Ug! Ug! Ugggggg!!!!!
mhs@06:48
Monday, July 24, 2000
Lunch (hours ago): tossed salad with leftover grilled spicy turkey sausages.Kewl, Mike has another screen snapshot here!
mhs@16:43
Breakfast: fresh fruit.
mhs@06:30
Sunday, July 23, 2000
Dinner: oven roasted beets, sauteed beet tops, grilled eggplant with garlic and olive oil, and grilled turkey sausages from Wild Oats, formerly Reay's.
mhs@19:47
Snack: a banana and some nut and raisin mix.
mhs@17:08
Lunch: tossed salad, TJ's veggie burgers. It has been brought to my attention that some of the items you read here are not completely "scd-legal". That is true. If you are a "SCD newbie", then please follow the rules in Elaine Gottschall's book. Do as she says, not as I write! Don't be a "monkey-see-monkey-do" or you'll end up in deep doo-doo. Listen to your gut--if after awhile one finds that small modifications to the regimen do not affect one's remission, then you're one of the lucky ones. Like me, I guess! :-) Anyway, more on the topic of "bending (or breaking) the rules at a later date. And Cat, thanks for bringing this to my attention--I had no intent to lead newbies astray with my writing. :-)
mhs@14:39
Breakfast: an apple, a banana, some fried eggs.. manchego cheese.
Monsoon is back!! A storm rolled through Tucson last night at about 20 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. One of our trees got blown sideways, so we'll have to fix that today. It was an awesome storm, with golf-ball sized hail on the east side of town. Monsoon 2000 was the earliest on record, but it calmed down quite early. Now July may be one of the dryest on record.. but there are still a few days to go!
mhs@08:08
Saturday, July 22, 2000
Dinner: leftover curried halibut, squash, and carrots; tossed salad. And for dessert, some fresh, organic strawberries.
mhs@21:08
Lunch: grilled chicken and a tossed salad.
mhs@14:00
Breakfast: fried eggs, a banana, some dried figs. I saw two desert hares while I was on my early-morning walk today. Wow, they are huge! The tops of their ears looked to be almost two feet tall with all four feet on the ground!
mhs@10:36
Friday, July 21, 2000
Dinner @ Keaton's: classic spinach salad (with bacon, hard boiled egg, and sliced mushrooms) and blackened catfish with steamed veggies.
mhs@20:44
Lunch: leftover halibut and squash in an Indian sauce, and a fresh tossed salad.
mhs@12:22
If you are a long-time reader of Flog, then you're probably aware that I eat organic and free-range foods whenever possible. Why poison my body with genetically modified crap and pesticides? We need to stop the companies that are poisoning our bodies.
mhs@06:47
Breakfast: apples and cantaloupe. No more fish and chips?! In today's email from Grist magazine: "environmentalists are warning that Britain's culinary claim to fame, fish and
chips, could disappear unless the nation does a better job of
managing its marine resources. The World Wildlife Fund says stocks
of cod, the traditional accompaniment to fried potatoes, are being
severely depleted because of overfishing, pollution, and rising ocean
temperatures. The group is calling for some sea areas to be put
off-limits to fishing boats. WWF's Matthew Davis: "This isn't just
a threat to ocean wildlife, it's a threat to our cultural heritage."

mhs@18:36
Snack: a banana. Did you read the front-page news today about how people need to get more colonoscopies?!?!? Here's a link to CNN's article titled "Common screening test missing many colon cancers, studies reveal". As for me, I don't believe it for a minute.
mhs@15:59
Lunch: a cheeseburger, without the bun.

Why does my computer run on Linux?! In addition to what I've already written on this site, this interesting article by "..an unemployed professional bum; [who] spends his days trying to break his system so that he has something to fix, or putting together puzzles.." may shed some light on the situation.
mhs@12:49
Lunch: leftover Thai chicken and brocolli in a masaman curry sauce.
mhs@12:46
Snacking (all day): nut and raisin mix.
mhs@12:45

In my Inbox this evening: Hi Mike,
I ran across your SCD stuff today sort of by accident. I was cruising
around Blogger and yours happened to be one that was updated today so I was
looking at it.
My mother has Crohn's disease, has had it for as long as I can remember. I
know it gives her fits all the time, but as cases go, I think she is
probably luckier than most. But I was delighted to accidentally discover
the SCD information so I can pass it on to her.
Thanks for making all that information available. I hope it will help her.
- Wendy

For those that are wondering what Linux is and why I think it is so cool, check this screenshot out: Lavender- it is of a theme by Largo, running in WindowMaker. Linux is so much more stable than Windows, so much more fun, and I think it's just much more visive.

For the last 5 hours I have been updating the Research section of scdiet.org's site. Check it out!
mhs@15:54
Lunch: tossed salad, leftover ribeye and turkey burgers.
mhs@15:53
Breakfast: fruit, nuts, cheese... off to the gym.Check this out: An article on 7/13/2000 in The Washington Post contains interesting
research indicating that the causes of disease were not genetic, but
rather, environment. While the research dealt primarily with cancers,
much of it may also be of assistance in understanding IBD.

This just in my email inbox:
A site like yours with food day after day by an veteran SCD follower is a
very nice addition in the SCD arsenal of information..It is precious per se
not only to newcommers but to all of us.The nice way You have done that is
an additional bonus
and the rich information You give day by day..I [e]specially liked the book
review you mentioned but I'd like more comment on her reasons WHY DID SCD not
work for her but in spite of it she recommends it?
Regards, Zdenko
Thanks, Zdenko! :-)
I have spoken to the author the new IBD book you are referring to (by Jini Patel Thompson titled
Listen To Your Gut!) and, in short, the author felt that too much time was needed in food preparation. I like Jini's book very much, despite her dissatifaction with the SCD! In our conversation over the telephone she indicated that she really didn't like to spend as much time in the kitchen as the SCD required. In defense of the SCD, I will say that my wife and I prepare the menus people see here in less than 30 minutes almost all of the time. I do not think that is too much time in the kitchen! Then again, I love to cook, I love to eat -- so modifying delicious recipes to be "good for me" is a worthwhile and fun challenge!
mhs@16:46
Lunch: leftover ribeye and a tossed salad.
mhs@12:06
Wednesday, July 12, 2000

mhs@13:03
Snack: a mix of peanuts, cashews, pecans, raisins, and pumpkin seeds.
mhs@10:56
I had a wonderful commute to work today, listening to NPR. The interview with Aleksandar Hemon was fascinating and I want his new book The Question of Bruno. It contains a powerful collection of stories (he read from two of them) by a young Bosnian exile/refugee trapped in Chicago after the war broke out.
mhs@08:10
Breakfast: an apple, a peach, some nuts, and dccc. For those of you still trying to find a source for dry curd, here's a useful page: dccc sources.
mhs@06:35

mhs@11:23
Tuesday, July 04, 2000
Lunch: leftovers of grilled chicken sausages, cauliflower "mashed potatoes", and sauteed kale.
I'm about to start preparing some food to bring a BBQ we'll attend later today; a modified Spanish tortilla/telurdada biasa (family-style Malaysian omelette). Of course, there won't be any potato in mine--cauliflower substitutes quite nicely!
mhs@13:12
Breakfast: an apple, a banana, some dried figs, nut and raisin mix, some Jarlsburg cheese.
mhs@10:19
Monday, July 03, 2000
Dinner: grilled turkey burgers with roasted red peppers and raisins; grilled zucchini; roasted organic baby beets with sauteed beet greens. Here's the recipe Laura used for the beets:
Take 3 bunches of baby beets with tops, wash well. Cut off the tops and place the beets in a roasting pan, toss beets with olive oil and add rosemary sprigs. Roast at 375 for about 30 minutes. Remove the skin while warm, if desired. Cut in half.
Meanwhile, saute the beet greens with olive oil and a splash of balsamic (or red wine) vinegar. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Place beet greens on a plate, top with the roasted baby beets. Enjoy!! (Recipe courtesy of Matt's Organics, via Curtis Aikens.)
mhs@20:34
Lunch: leftover grilled chicken and grilled chicken sausages, a delicious tossed salad, and some leftover grilled trout. Cubed canteloupe for dessert.
mhs@14:34

Yeah, yeah.. I've been remiss in updating this thing. There really hasn't been much in the way of eating that I felt like writing about. But here goes:
Dinner: grilled chicken sausages from TJ's, sauteed kale, and stir-fried brocolli and scallions.
I've been busy getting my computer to do in Linux what it used to do in Windows. I have left Windows 98 in the dust. No looking back, folks. You're reading this from a free operating system that totally rocks! :-)
