Nirvana of Peristalsis

(also known as Mike's Flog)

A Regimen for Remission
This log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my Crohn's in a drug-free remission.

Monkey-see,
monkey-don't

Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

"Dot-com bust" or not, there is no denying the power of the Internet. If it weren't for the web I would never have learned about the SCD, the regimen that has kept my Crohn's in remission for 4+ years, drug free. The web remains a wonderful, powerful way for people to communicate, share, support, heal, and grow!

Here's a short interview with Ev, the founder of Blogger/Pyra. And yes, Laura and I did donate to the Server Fund (but it sounds as though they really needed a Salary Fund).

THE RAIN IN SPAIN FALLS WHEREVER THE GOVERNMENT WANTS

Tens of thousands of demonstrators, including musicians and children, took to the streets of Barcelona yesterday to protest a massive $23 billion water diversion project in Spain. The plan, which is now before the country's parliament for final approval, would divert the Ebro River in the northeast and involve the construction of 120 dams to bring water to the dry southeastern parts of the country. Activists say the project would benefit developers and the electricity industry at the expense of the environment. They estimate that yesterday's protest drew 300,000, while police say 80,000 attended. More than 400,000 protested the plan last October in the city of Zaragoza; a third protest is scheduled for next month in Madrid. From: New Jersey Online, Associated Press, 25 Feb 2001

I am back from a week in San Jose. Sorry, no time to update Flog but here is a quick summation of my SCD munchings away from home while staying in a dumpy motel on The Alameda:
Breakfast: fruit (apples and bananas), pecans (from Trader Joe's), organic Thompson raisins (from Trader Joe's). Lunch: there is a wonderful Cuban place on Race Street where I had a lovely garlic chicken one day; spinach and mushroom quiche with tossed salad from Cafe Rosalena another day; grilled Pacific red snapper from the Race Street Kitchen (awesome selection of fresh fish!). Dinner: I bought a bag of washed baby spinach, a bottle of oil & vinegar dressing, and a roasted chicken and dined on that for two nights; Ram took me out to a neat Cal-Mex place called Aqui one night; and I had a chicken burrito another night.

It looks as though the near future holds many more days in San Jose and I hope I can update Flog in a more timely manner if that happens!

(snipped from alt.os.linux.mandrake..)
Excluding stability, here are the top 10 reasons you should want to try Linux over MS-Windows 2000.... (drum roll, please)

10. Curiosity
9. You can play xbill on Linux.
8. Unix users truly prefer Linux to Windows.
7. Easier to prototype solutions on Linux due to lego-like connectibility of utilities.
6. The GUIs like KDE and GNOME have MUCH better eye-candy than has Windows.
5. Backlash from MS's anti-linux propaganda ("if they're concerned about Linux, it must be good.")
4. Customizabiliy and embedability. (don't need a feature? Don't load it. Minimal system fits on a floppy)
3. Free as in gratis (costs nothing)
2. Free as in libertas (open source)
...and the number one reason you should want to try Linux over MS-W2K...
1. That really cute penguin mascot, Tux.

One of the reasons I like apples in the morning (I prefer Braeburn or Gala and despise those mealy, tough-skinned "Red Delicious"--exactly who said they are "America's favorite"?!) is they keep me regular. Apple in, doodie out. Short and sweet. Apples at other times of the day do not necessarily cause an immediate bm, but loosen things up just the same. Anyway, I'm writing this because at midnight I woke up with the sweats, went to the bathroom for 15 minutes, eliminated everything (nothing left this morning!), and then did it again 15 minutes later. Hmmmm... must've been that apple cider! That, and a lot of stress.

Breakfast: an apple, fresh, homemade organic SCD yogurt. My third batch so far--and it is wonderful! I've got 2 liters of delicious eating!

It is sooooo nice to get mail like this (this one coming from a visitor to scdiet.org):

Fortunately I do not suffer from intestinal disease but I have friends and acquaintances who do and I have recommended Elaine Gottschall's book to them and am glad to know of this website, both of which are excellent. Congratulations on your ability to get the word out and on your creative use of the Internet to do so. I have given and/or recommended the book to many people: a woman on a bus who happened to mention her problem; a close friend with HIV; a client with intestinal disease; another client with two autistic daughters; a good friend who is an open-minded medical doctor. And that's just the few I can recall! I'm glad to have a website to send people to in the future, in addition to recommending the book. Thanks for making a difference and good luck in your work.

Dinner: delicious chicken cattiatore! Dessert: SCD yogurt. I happen to prefer the yogurt from my first batch. It might be the type of milk I used this time (which was unhomogenized) which gave the yogurt a "lumpier" consistency and a less tart taste. That said.. it's still quite good!
mhs@20:12

Breakfast: fruit, nuts, cheese. The yogurt is finished, and is cooling in the refrigerator. I look forward to enjoying it after my trip to the gym.

Be sure to check out the new "SCD Quick Reference" Microsoft Excel workbook, courtesy of Ellen on the SCD Listserve.

Dinner: What a feast! We cooked up: Pla pao ubon, sauteed carrots, brocolli with garlic, and stuffed portabella mushrooms! In case you don't have a Thai dictionary handy, the pla pao ubon is fish with basil and lemongrass. In our case, it was trout, stuffed with garlic, lemongrass, basil, and some fresh pepper; wrapped in banana leaf, and then re-wrapped in foil (like a burrito). Cooked 3-4 minutes per side on the grill.... oooh it was so nice!
mhs@21:07

Lunch: tossed salad, leftover grilled turkey sausages.
mhs@16:57

Rock and roll! I am running my work laptop from home, connected to the high-speed line, without having to manually replace all of my TCP/IP settings! Way cool. How did I do this? I'm using a little utility called NetSwitcher. You type the information into the program once, it does the rest.

Breakfast: fruit, figs, cheese, nuts.. I'll be grazing all day.

"Gee, I could have been on the SCD!"

Hmm.. a new advertising campaign slogan?
mhs@21:02

I'm making my second batch of SCD yogurt! I'm sticking with the organic/free range whole milk because it made such a wonderful yogurt the first time. This time I'm trying Straus Family Creamery Organic Whole Milk, which isn't even homogonized. Check out the picture of (and a link to) the beautiful Straus farm on the cool California coast:

calves at Straus Family Creamery

So here are Mike's quick steps to make 1 liter of SCD-legal yogurt:

  • Take one liter of milk out of the fridge and pour it into the top portion of a double-boiler, cover;
  • Put about one inch of hot water in the bottom of the double-boiler, place top portion on top (duh) and turn on the gas (high heat);
  • Approximately 10-15 minutes later, the milk will be at 180 degrees Fahrenheit (I live in Arizona, at an altitude of 2800 feet or so; your times may vary). Keep the milk there for 2 minutes, then remove the top portion of the double boiler from the heat and put it in the refrigerator to cool (covered);
  • Approximately 60 minutes later, the milk will be at 108-112 degrees Fahrenheit (the maximum temperature to add the starter bacteria). Remove from the refridgerator and add one package of bacteria/starter mix to about 1 Cup of the warm milk;
  • Add the rest of the milk, stir, and place in the Yogourmet Multi yogurt maker;
  • Cover it, plug it in, and wait 24 hours before enjoying!

    If only you could smell how great it tastes!
