Nirvana of Peristalsis

(also known as Mike's Flog)

A Regimen for Remission
This log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my Crohn's in a drug-free remission.

Monkey-see,
monkey-don't

Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

I'm back from 3 days in DC (working with Doug and Patrick and their Advanced Strategy Lab, as well as Susan, Mick, and Tim). It was a very successful meeting, and many of the participants came up to us afterwards and thanked us for enabling them to accomplish so much more than they had ever imagined.

We had a huge storm last night. It was great fun! Fifty, sixty mile per hour winds, torrential rains, several trees down in the neighborhood. It all started around 4:30PM, and ended around 8PM. However, we lost power at 5:20 and it didn't come back on until midnight. The batch of SCD yogurt I was making will need to be thrown out because it didn't stay at the right temperature for six hours or so.

One fun aspect of the storm was going outside to watch the tail end of the sunset during one of the breaks in the rains. Many neighbors were wandering around, meeting each other, talking. This certainly does not happen when televisions are on, VCRs are running, etc. It was great fun!

Dinner, yesterday: grilled salmon with walnut-cilantro pesto, tossed salad, avocado, gazpacho.

Breakfast: SCD yogurt (time to make more), an apple.

It rained for almost an hour yesterday. Baby toads are hopping everywhere! Hop hop hop. Hop hop. They are a delight to watch! Where are they going? They just seem to follow some invisible, unknown call to hop around the house, down the driveway, and into the street. Where do they go from there? Who knows?! They sure do make us laugh with joy over the beauty of nature!

According to C|Net, Netscape 6.1 is far better than 6.0, but still not worth switching from IE. In fact, "the only compelling reason to switch remains the same: Netscape isn't from Microsoft."

mhs@07:43

Dinner, yesterday: steamed organic artichokes, grilled organic carrots and zucchini, grilled trout with butter and pepper, tossed salad with a mustard vinaigrette. Afterwards, a nice walk around the neighborhood. The sun is setting a little earlier now, so it was actually dark when we ventured out. There were 4 baby toads searching for food at our front door! They are so cute...less than 1/2 inch (12 cm.?) long. Here's a picture I took of one hopping around our back patio yesterday afternoon (which is nearly twice its actual size):

Lunch, Monday @ a delicious Middle-Eastern place in Carroll Gardens: chicken swarma with lots of salad and baba gannoujh.

The photo above is of Mike Simons (in his SCD t-shirt) visiting Raman Prasad's SCD kitchen in Brooklyn, NY. Raman is holding a can of the recently reviewed IBD "liquid diet" product from a well-known multinational confectionery conglomerate. (See the complete picture; read the product review.) It was wonderful, at long last, to meet Raman (and his wife), share IBD histories, lessons learned, and more!

Dinner, Monday on the plane (first class): tossed salad with walnuts, grapes, and goat cheese; grilled shoulder steak.
mhs@10:49

NY:
Dinner, Friday with Geoff & Bunny @ Blue Ribbon (in Park Slope): Spanish red wine, a very nice salad of grilled endives, a delicious lobster.

Brunch, with Juan and Mavi on Saturday consisted of an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet in Battery Park City: grilled vegetables, salad, veal stew, chicken, fish, and more!

Afterwards, a nice walk around BPC (here's a picture of me in front of a humid, hazy New York Harbor).

After BPC we headed up to the New Museum, where we saw a very interesting exhibit of short animations by William Kentridge. The Kentridge exhibit was really great..go check it out! As we headed home I spotted a street vendor with a table-full of CD-ROMs in colored cases, and stopped by to check out the goods. The guy was selling every kind of software you could possibly imagine, for $30 per CD: Office 2002, Windows XP, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop...!

Yoga @ OMYoga on 14th Street. I must say, this was the most surprising thing about my trip. I had found out about this studio over the Internet and selected a particular class based upon the level and the style of the instructor. As it ended up, it was a very heavy workout, quite nice, but surprising in that the place had no running water, no working air conditioning, and a substitute teacher, too! It was 86 degrees outside, there were 20 or more of us in a small, south-facing studio…and it was humid! We were sweating so profusely I would have thought it was Bikram style! Not exactly what I had hoped for, but a worthwhile experience nonetheless.

Dinner, Sunday @ Pepe Giolo on 10th Ave and 25th Street with Jim, Ken, and Samara (and Lola!). Jeff, Nina, and Tommy stopped by, too. My SCD meal: tossed salad of mixed greens, apples, and goat cheese; chicken Milanese.
mhs@10:45

Sorry for the gap in Flog/Nirvana of Peristalsis updates! I was away on a really nice (but short) vacation, and didn't have access to a computer very often.

Two nights in PA with my parents, two nights in NYC with Juan and Mavi! I have a bunch of pictures, some of which I will share with you here. Snacks included the usual: nuts, raisins, dried figs, and bananas.

PA:
Apart from the already-mentioned meals, my parents and I made an SCD-legal gourmet feast on Friday evening! We had fun sharing in the cooking tasks, and then took a long walk around the block to ease digestion after the large meal: a fruit salad of grapes, citrus, apple, a little lettuce; grilled eggplant; sautéed broccoli rabe, spinach, and garlic; grilled filet mignon.

On Saturday Mom and I visited Swarthmore College, where she showed me “Abracadabra”, by Patrick Doherty. Abracadabra is a 40-foot sculpture made of saplings and twigs (harvested from a nearby water control and retention project), leaning up against a towering linden tree. The sculpture looks like a large beehive or a swirling tornado.
mhs@10:45

Breakfast: fruit, dried figs, and some of Laura's Lemon Merengue pie!!!!!
mhs@10:37

Dinner: a gorgeous sunset, grilled chicken marinated in an olive and garlic tapenade, steamed broccoli, avocado, and a tossed salad. We somehow forgot about the gazpacho! :-(
mhs@20:45

Veet reel kurry! Alas, I am a stinky-boy...3 days' worth of awesome curried meals and I am fit to be sent somewhere in Asia. It has been delicious, but there is no more...for now. Lunch: the last of the curried chicken, some non-SCD wild rice, delicious Swiss chard, and a little curried lentils. Up on queue for tonight: chicken marinating in a garlic and olive tapenade, gazpacho, and more.
mhs@13:01

Breakfast, after a morning jog: (you know the drill by now!)

Dinner, yesterday: grilled salmon, sauteed Swiss chard with garlic, steamed green beans with almonds and lemon juice.
