Nirvana of Peristalsis

(also known as Mike's Flog)

A Regimen for Remission
This log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my Crohn's in a drug-free remission.

Monkey-see,
monkey-don't

Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

Lunch: chicken soup and a pear. Snack: carrot-walnut muffins.
mhs@20:03

Breakfast: SCD yogurt, an apple. I got about 4 hours' sleep last night because I had too much on my mind. Don't you hate when that happens?! Anyway, I stared out the window and watched Orion move through the clear, cold (36 degrees) night sky. It was gorgeous.

Dinner, last night: you won't believe it, but I ate a quarter pounder with cheese, no onions, without the bun. And french fries. Don't do this unless you really feel invincible (or are really hungry and completely out of options). They *do* sell mini-salads in a cup at that not-to-be-mentioned fast food emporium, but I just wasn't interested in iceberg lettuce in a cup last night.

According to this morning's New York Times, "There was a sense of watching a skins-vs.-shirts basketball game as hundreds of Taliban soldiers streamed out of Kunduz in northern Afghanistan and surrendered to the Northern Alliance. It was as if all it took to join the other side was to remove one's jersey. Enemies a few hours earlier embraced as if they were old friends. In some instances, they were."

photo by James Hill for the New York Times

"That applied, however, only to Afghan Taliban troops, about 300 of whom left Kunduz according to a prepared script and handed themselves over to their countrymen on the city outskirts. "Yesterday, my enemy," one alliance general said with a shrug. "Today, my brother." The situation was not nearly so jolly, though, for 400 non-Afghans among the Taliban who gave themselves up in another area outside the city." Photo caption: A Taliban soldier from Kunduz is greeted by Northern Alliance troops after surrendering at Amirabad.

This holiday season I'm wishing for peace and harmony.

To be held here in sunny Tucson, Jan. 4-6, 2002, this event is open to all registrants who wish to learn, share, and grow. It is not an exclusive SCD event. :-) The conference will explore how dietary changes (of any kind) augment (and/or substitute for) traditional prescriptive medicine and surgical treatments. Awareness, willingness, and effort are three key components to achieving and maintaining intestinal health. First, one needs to be aware of what to look for in the way of contributing factors (stress, anxiety, trigger foods, etc.) and how small changes in one's health may indicate a necessary change. Second, one has to be willing to make the necessary changes and allow them to happen. Simply swallowing a bunch of pills or cutting out problem foods will not entirely solve the problem..one has to be willing to allow these cures to do their work. Finally, effort will be required in continually monitoring the way one is reacting to the contributing factors, how one makes changes to minimize their impact, and sticking to whatever necessary changes one embarks upon. It ain't easy, but the payoff is huge!

Book review: “Relax For The Fun Of It: A Cartoon And Audio Guide To Releasing Stress”, by Allan Hirsh, M.A. 2001, Caramal Publishing, Inc., Vancouver, B.C.

I recently received this enjoyable and helpful book and audio guide from a fellow IBD friend. Following a busy, eventful workweek I read the book and listened to the audio, and the combination worked wonderfully. It works -- I fell asleep for a few moments the first time I listened to Hirsh’s relaxation guide!

Hirsh is a psychotherapist, trainer, and able cartoonist; his gentle humor and comfortable style make stress management easy and fun. The book’s text provides short, insightful tips and suggestions for managing stress, learning how to relax, increasing creativity, and more. The cartoons poke fun at our everyday selves and serve to reinforce the text. Hirsh’s soothing voice on the audio guide (CD) calmly takes the listener through a series of easy exercises to release stress and relax. One requires less than 20 minutes listening for the CD to work its’ magic. This first-time listener finished feeling calm and refreshed; repeat listeners are assured ever-greater rewards!

Hirsh’s work is geared toward the public at large. Having experienced excellent body workers, yoga instructors, and massage workers in the past, I think it would be interesting to see (and hear) how the book and audio guide would be customized for people with health problems, such as IBD or IBS. For example, it would be interesting to hear some visualization techniques (tips on how to clear the mind, suggested colors, digestive parts to visualize healing, more focus on diaphragmatic breathing).

This book and CD are wonderful for anyone wanting a gentle ‘push’ to relax while traveling on a commuter train, plane, or at home at the end of a busy day.
