A Regimen
for Remission
This
log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD
foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my
Crohn's in a drug-free remission.
Monkey-see,
monkey-don't
Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

Not All Carbohydrates Are Good
A Harvard Medical School article explores the changes needed to improve the USDA's "food pyramid" for proper health; certain aspects of the article carry additional weight for those wishing to achieve intestinal health through diet:
"...The types of carbohydrates you eat are as important as the kinds of
fat you eat when it comes to preventing diabetes, heart disease, and
other chronic illnesses. Carbohydrates contribute about half of all
calories in the average American diet. Most come from just seven
sources: bread; soft drinks and sodas; cakes, cookies, quick breads,
and doughnuts; sugars, syrups, and jams; white potatoes;
ready-to-eat cereals; and milk. In other words, most of our
carbohydrate calories come from sugars or highly refined grains..."

Snacks: macaroons, almonds.Lunch: the last of the chicken and cilantro, some lentils and Swiss chard. Some guy named Gary wrote me about my consumption of dairy. He asked a bunch of questions and didn't leave a valid email address... I hate when that happens! :-) Anyway, I really don't consume "dairy" in the lactose-sense of the word. When I write "homemade yogurt" it is synonymous with SCD yogurt, which is "cooked" for 24+ hours and the lactose is predigested so it doesn't bother most people.

Here's an excerpt from very well written explanation and review of BTVC on Amazon.com: "The Bible of the Controversial SCDiet", March 17, 2002
Reviewer: Mark Meloon
At the risk of infuriating the SCD fans, I feel it necessary to try to write a review that explains the controversy over this diet and how this book relates. First, it's important for me to state that I am no fan of alternative medicine and that IS what we're talking about here. The author (who holds a Masters in biochemistry) has developed a diet which claims to be able to cure inflammatory bowel diseases, a class of terrible autoimmune disorders in which the body's immune system attacks the intestines (in Crohn's, the entire digestive tract is a risk). The diet essentially requires one to carefully choose the specific carbohydrates they will eat (hence the name). The SCD has a substantial following and presence on the internet. And Gottschall actually prints her phone number in the book -- a testiment to how strongly she believes in the diet and her desire to help. The medicial community is well aware of the diet and has not endorsed or accepted the diet primarily because of the lack of well-constructed scientific studies. So I consider the diet controversal because there is considerable friction and downright animosity between the SCD followers and the medical community.
If you are interested in persuing this diet, then you really owe it to yourself, the author, and the SCD community to purchase this book. It is extremely readable and you will find yourself unable to put it down. Gottschall details her reasoning behind the diet (which is actually quite simple) and how it works. It's always useful when an author explains the theory behind any regimen because that knowledge helps you (a) decide whether the regimen is worth trying and (b) make decisions about foods not explicitly covered by the book. There is also a fairly comprehensive recipe section which you will find extemely valuable. I don't want to give away too many details of the diet here (read the book for details) but it's worth noting that the author emphasizes that this diet must be followed strictly for a minimum of two years. After you read her theory, you'll understand the rationale behind this strict adherence...".

One and a half million hits!
Sometime over the weekend of March 2-3, 2002, a visitor to the homepage of SCDiet.org registered the 1.5 millionth hit! By many standards that is a small number; but we look at it as a meaningful message: more and more people are looking to diet as a means towards intestinal health!
