A Regimen
for Remission
This
log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD
foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my
Crohn's in a drug-free remission.
Monkey-see,
monkey-don't
Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

New York City's Metropolitan Transit Authority is celebrating 10 years of their Poetry In Motion campaign. The (excerpted) poem I enjoyed the most is by Edna St. Vincent Millay and is titled "Recuerdo":... We were very tired, we were very merry
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry;
And you ate an apple, and I ate a pear,
From a dozen each, we had bought somewhere;
And the sky went wan, and the wind came cold,
And the sun rose dripping, a bucketful of gold. ...

grep is a handy command-line tool for UNIX and Linux users, allowing one to search through directories of files for specific character strings of text or code and return the resulting filenames and instances of the specified charactrer string. I'm very excited to find a Windows version of the grep, called Windows Grep.

Breakfast: fruit. I'm out of yogurt and need to make more this weekend. The most recent batch of yogurt came out a bit runny, with a 2 mm. yellowish top on it. The "top" is due to my having used non-homogenized milk; the top is the 'cream' that rose to the top of the yogurt. The flavor is nice but the runniness disappoints me. What is the cause of the runniness? Perhaps it is the milk.. in that the milk was not homogenized, the fats and cream, etc. are not blasted or whirlled into billions of smaller particles, thereby separating out slightly during the fermentation process and disallowing a more consistent yogurt. Perhaps the temperature went too high during fermentation? Perhaps I needed to ferment it even longer? No matter...I'll make a new batch this coming weekend! :-)

Left work at 4:15, made a few stops along the way home, snacked upon some of the attempted nut/sunflower/raisin bars (mustly just a jumble of delicious crunch right now), took a 20-minute nap, and then did 45 minutes of yoga. Dinner: grilled salmon, sauteed radishes with scallions (you must try it to believe it!), and sauteed carrots, zucchini, and yellow squash.
mhs@20:35
Lunch: leftover spinach salad, fruit, nuts.
mhs@12:47
Monday, April 15, 2002
Dinner @ Blue Willow: herbal peppermint iced tea with honey, spinach salad with grilled chicken.Lunch: leftover salmon, lentils, and Swiss chard.
mhs@20:22
Breakfast: fruit, homemade yogurt. I used organic non-homogenized milk from TJ's this time (I usually use the organic homogenized) and found the cream top on my yogurt to be a bit gross. After removing it, the yogurt beneath it is a bit more liquidy than usual. Perhaps it needed to cook longer, perhaps it got too warm in the cooker, perhaps the bacteria couldn't breathe properly with the cream top...perhaps the yogurt further down is more like I prefer. :-)
Dinner, yesterday: tossed salad, curried red lentils, sauteed Swiss chard with ginger, grilled salmon with butter and pepper.

Everything is yellow.

The flowers on the palo verde and the agave; everything outside my windows is yellow. The animals are well aware that it is spring. The baby hummingbirds have flown their nest (it doesn't take long to 'grow' a hummingbird), and the lizards are going through their mating rituals. My garden, however, thinks it is summer; the plants are wilting in our 95-degree weather today. Lunch: leftover halibut Veracruz, tossed salad. Breakfast: fruit, dried figs, nuts. I tried to make some sunflower seed honeybars but they didn't work out correctly. I'll keep trying, or I'll have to keep buying them at honeybar.ca.

Dinner, yesterday @ Golden Corral: Wow, I hadn't been to one of these in a long time! I left work late and was in a hurry to get to a 6PM meeting..needed food..this place was next to the library where the meeting was to be held. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to find foods that I could eat! Never mind the pizza, baked potatoes, and corn-starch-laden soups; they had a very nice salad bar, some delicious roasted chicken, and I had a small slice of baked ham. The CCFA meeting was very interesting and informative! A panel of one pharmacist and three students described how the program of studies works and then described some research they had done for us regarding Crohn's and colitis. The panelists described symptoms, differences, and suspected contributing factors for both diseases. The attendees interjected additional information and asked questions about long-term effects of drugs, how particular drugs do their work, and more. I was very interested to learn that babies that are born naturally have a completely different intestinal flora than those that are delivered through C-section. On schedule for next month's meeting: relaxation and stress management for IBDers! :-)

Breakfast: fruit, SCD yogurt. The local chapter of the CCFA will be hosting a panel from the University of Arizona's School of Pharmacy this evening. I am hoping to attend. While the panel is expected to discuss drug therapy for Crohn's, colitis, etc., I am hoping to learn more about how particular drugs combat the same bacteria that the SCD addresses (a therapy of starving out problem bacteria and reducing colonic mucous through dietary changes). What synergies exist between the two therapy styles? What are the side effects of the two therapy styles? Stay tuned! :-)

Possible title for our book about intestinal health through diet? Aliens Stole My Colon: And How My HMO Paid For It!" Naaah, that would be more appropriate for those who've had surgery. What about How Aliens Stole My Colon and The Regimen I Used To Get It Back?
Dinner, yesterday: sauteed beet tops, roasted beets, grilled leeks with pepper and butter, and grilled turkey burgers with curry, onion, and ginger.

Saturday, April 06, 2002
Dinner: tossed salad, Swiss chard with ginger, sauteed ahi tuna with garlic and Kalamata olives. Dessert: canteloupe. We hosted an enjoyable gathering of the Tucson intestinal health support group at our home this afternoon. For me, one of the highlights was reviewing a TGI Friday's "Take-Out" menu that Liz brought for the group. Together, we looked at the menu and discussed foods that appeared to be SCD legal. Liz then explained which ones met SCD criteria, and pointed out a few not-so-obvious dishes that could be prepared to be SCD legal by making a small request (based upon Liz's meeting with a restaurant manager).
mhs@20:04
Lunch: chicken soup, almond-herb bread.

It's spring, a time of change, growth... This article provides motivational concepts for relationships, one's health, and business.
mhs@10:13
It is a beautiful Saturday morning here in Tucson. We're on the edge of a storm system that has been blowing in from the South for 24 hours or so. It doesn't appear that we'll get any (much needed!) rain, but the smell of humidity is sweet in the air, further sweetened by all of the flowers that are blooming. The skies were a hot pink at sunrise, gray afterwards, and are now clearing for another sunny day!
Our yard is filled with signs of spring! We have families of quail that are constantly calling to each other, lots of little finches chattering away, a mother hummingbird and two babies (that have just flown their nest), lizards, and more. The cactus buds are forming and preparing to open, and they are forming many new petals and branches. All of this in one of the driest springtime's on record.
Breakfast: homemade SCD yogurt, an apple, some almonds, and an organic sunflower honey bar from honeybar.ca. Someday we'll figure out how to make our own seed, nut, and raisin bars that are as delicious as these! Dinner, yesterday: tossed salad of mixed greens and vinaigrette, grilled salmon with a honey-cayenne glaze, slow-cooked asparagus.
