Nirvana of Peristalsis

(also known as Mike's Flog)

A Regimen for Remission
This log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my Crohn's in a drug-free remission.

Monkey-see,
monkey-don't

Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

Monsoon is here! Glorious, dark storm clouds build through the day, dump rain, and recede - making way for glorious sunsets! We returned from our evening walk on Thursday to find two geckos entwined in a mating knot. Later that evening (2AM the following morning) we were awoken by what sounded like a wounded duck...but which was really a horny frog or toad, belching out its call to a mate.

The Arizona Daily Star has a great article this morning about desert toads mating in short-lived monsoonal ponds.

I visited my Chinese herbalist and Chi Nei Tsang practitioner yesterday, and was pleased to confirm that I am doing well. I haven't done as much self-administered CNT as I should be doing but it is helping nonetheless. We rang a Tibetan bell and moved it around my body to find areas of imbalance; my left side needs a bit more work.

About 20 years ago I felt the first symptoms of heavy pain, night sweats, and lots of diarrhea. I was in my teens. After many tests for lesser conditions, the docs finally arrived at Crohn's disease. Azulfidine, Keflex, Cipro, 6-MP, Asacol, and Prednisone were the drugs of choice. I took Prednisone, on and off, for 3 years or more.

Those Prednisone years were supposed to have been my bone-building years. I was supposed to be consuming and absorbing lots of calcium. That said, my diet as a teen and until about 6 years ago was very low in calcium. Even though I went to the gym to work out, my bones were fighting a losing battle.

5 1/2 ago I started the SCD. This food log tracks 2 1/2 years of the foods that, after years of drugs, have kept me in a controlled remission. 4 years ago I had a DEXA exam and my bone density was decidedly lower than the norm. I was supposed to increase my calcium (yes) and go to the gym 3 times a week, do some jogging, and other load-bearing exercises (not done consistently). I was also supposed to reduce stress so as to lower the adrenaline and its effect on calcium resorption (yoga practice helps).

I am staring a new chapter in this quest for health. My intestinal health is quite fine, thank you...but according to last month's DEXA update the bones need work more than ever before. My doc wants to put me on Fosamax for a few years but I protest because instead of helping build bone density and flexibility, the caustic drink actually shows more results in simply "halting" the entire process of bone break-down and rebuilding by the osteoclasts and osteoblasts.

So I'm seeing a Chinese herbalist. She informs me that I have cold areas in my body (cold in the Chinese herbal sense), and I'm taking some herbs, learning chi nei tsang, and taking some super-calcium drink called Osteoprocare. I'm hoping to get a thryoid check and see an endocrinologist to learn ways to optimize my calcium (and magnesium and manganese, etc.) absorption and increase my bone density. Stay tuned for more adventures in bone building!
