Nirvana of Peristalsis

(also known as Mike's Flog)

A Regimen for Remission
This log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my Crohn's in a drug-free remission.

Monkey-see,
monkey-don't

Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

Thanksgiving dinner, yesterday @ the Tanzer's: roasted free-range turkey, butternut squash puree, SCD cranberry sauce, tossed salad. Dessert: Laura's pecan pie (and a dollop of completely SCD-illegal icecream, just because I deserved it!). Afterwards, a glass of merlot at the new home of Tim and Ana. And yes, it rained again (just a little!) on Thanksgiving. :-)

The Fall issue of the CCFA's Foundation Focus has arrived. The cover article titled "Festive Foods: Friend or foe?", by Laura Hitchens, is a well-written article for IBDers to follow during the holidays! Ms. Hitchens' article is positive, proactive, and very well written! I also appreciate that it is 'diet neutral' and reiterates patient individuality, so those following regimens such as the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (or others) can benefit from it without conflicting with their current regimen.

I have not received my current issue of the CCFA magazine, but it seems quite a few others have. Several have written in about the question I posed regarding bone density issues and alternatives to Fosamax. I want to thank those who have written so far (one of them is a fellow SCDer for 2 years and doing great!!!), and will share any knowledge I gain from them on this page! In the interim, for those who are new to this page, I believe I do not have a bone density problem at this time, as explained in this post I made after I got a second opinion from an endocrinologist.

So, you want to be a fighter pilot?
In "The Kabul-Ki dance" (November 2002 issue of The Atlantic Monthly), Mark Bowden provides an amazing look inside the cockpit with the pilots and weapons-systems officers of the 391st Fighter Squadron. These men (and women!) are the top guns of the US air war in Afghanistan. The story tells of 10-hour flights in all-metal seats that are smaller than coach class on a passenger plane. Talk about discomfort--there are no bathrooms--just a little bag to pee into (assuming one wants to expose oneself to the below-freezing temperatures). The pilots are given "go, no-go" pills to control their bowels and energy levels.

The reason your doctor doesn't know about the SCD, per today's Wall Street Journal article: "The failure of the IBD diet to gain widespread acceptance within the medical community is a lesson in the grim financial reality of medical research. Doctors don't accept treatments that aren't validated by controlled studies, and drug companies, which fund most medical research, pay to study pills, not diets."
