Nirvana of Peristalsis

(also known as Mike's Flog)

A Regimen for Remission
This log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my Crohn's in a drug-free remission.

Monkey-see,
monkey-don't

Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

Dinner: steamed artichokes, sauteed green beans with almonds, pan-fried turkey burgers with ginger and spices.

Lunch: chicken soup with some fresh baby Swiss chard and thyme from the garden.

Meanwhile, we're out on our back porch, enjoying the sun, quiet, and the occasional chirp of an Arizona Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps). These cute little birds are much like the Black-capped chickadee of the East coast. They hop from branch to branch, looking for small bugs to eat. They especially enjoy a bush we refer to as the pink beauty, which is just starting to bloom now.

Dinner: chicken soup.

The StonyField web site seems to support inulin as an additive (to increase motility and calcium absorption). I wrote them to suggest that we can get our inulin naturally elsewhere, thank you very much.
mhs@19:50

Breakfast: homemade yogurt and applesauce.

It has been awhile since I purchased StonyField yogurt as a starter for my homemade yogurt, perhaps 6+ months. I bought some on Saturday and am having my own yogurt today. I made it with 1/3 cup yogurt and one package of the powdered yogurt starter. This batch is less tart than the yogurt made with only the powdered starter, and it is thicker.

I just noticed on the container that the StonyField has changed their ingredients list and have started to include inulin, a fructooligosaccharide (FOS). Dietary fiber went from 0% on my last container to 12% on this container. Is FOS the cause of this? FOS is one of those things that is highly debated on the alt.support.crohns-colitis group, and in other groups as well. One researcher on Healing Crow offers up quite a bit of information against FOS. So, I must contact StonyField, find out more, and perhaps switch brands (or return to the using only powdered starter).

The Tucson Intestinal Health Support Group met this afternoon at our home. It was a small gathering this time, with a total of five in attendance. Two of the attendees were new; one married woman with Celiac and a single mom from Tempe with Ulcerative Colitis. Everyone is on the SCD and doing much better than without. Laura made a lemon meringue pie, which we are bringing to a birthday party this evening. Everyone wants to know when our own SCD cookbook will be ready: late 2003 (after Laura finishes her Ph.D.).

Breakfast: yogurt, applesauce, and some leftover dessert from last night.

Dinner, yesterday: a huge feast at the home of Tim and Ana. A large house on five acres of cactus and ironwood-covered land, a gorgeous 30+ minute sunset, and six cooks in the largest kitchen this side of Texas! The red wine was flowing, the cutting boards were cutting, the music was happy, and the atmosphere was warm and fun. Tim's contributions: tasty grilled salmon fillet, risotto (not for the SCD folks), many varieties of wine; Ana's contribution: a delicious soup of roasted red peppers with goat cheese and cilantro, tossed salad of homegrown red leaf lettuce, roasted artichokes and butter, homegrown brocolli florets with butter and lemon; Bruce: some of the best enchilada casserole I've ever had (with hand-made corn tortillas--I tried a piece and it was delicious and completely SCD-illegal); Ann: a nice black bean and avocado salad; Me: two pounds of fresh Florida grouper in papillote with lime and spinach; Laura's dessert: a delicious new variation on her apple almond crisp, adding pears this time. All this food and fun helped me momentarily forget the Columbia disaster from yesterday morning. How truly sad; the astronauts were so great, so loved, so close...and now they are so deeply missed.
