Here are two scanned images of the owls and some of the baby Gambel's quail:
It is late springtime in Tucson. It is a beautiful time of year! Fourteen baby Gambel's quail hatched in our yard on Friday. We spent much of last weekend watching them scurry around the yard with their parents. They are like fuzzy pingpong balls with little legs, very adorable. They have to jump up to get at most of the little bugs that are on the organic parsley and other plants in our garden. On the other side of the size scale, the Home Depot hardware store in Oro Valley has three baby great horned owls, about 20 inches tall. They are living inside the store in the gardening area, where this is an opening for them to fly out when they are ready. We also have all sorts of lizards, some of them doing courtship dances and lizard pushups at high noon. And then there are all of the delightful hummingbirds.... It's pretty amazing here most of the time! We got into the 90's yesterday; it is soon to be June. Saturday, May 10, 2003 Dinner: roasted chicken legs with orange, lime, and garlic; stir fry of oyster mushrooms, carrots, and scallion; leftover beets with thyme.
We are blessed with 14 baby Gambel's quail in our little back yard. They follow their momma around and stay under cover of low shrubs and enjoy hunting for bugs and water in our herb garden and in the overgrown collard greens!
Lunch: tossed salad, leftover grilled salmon. Tuesday, May 06, 2003 Lunch: leftover almond-encrusted sole, spinach with garlic, and roasted peppers stuffed with goat cheese.
We have a momma Gambel's quail in our yard. She is nesting 13+ eggs! Monday, May 05, 2003 Breakfast: homemade yogurt and applesauce, Lois Lang's nut bread.
When is a colonoscopy not a colonoscopy? When it is a virtual colonoscopy! Thursday, May 01, 2003 Dinner: chicken soup, baby artichokes.
