A Regimen
for Remission
This
log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD
foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my
Crohn's in a drug-free remission.
Monkey-see,
monkey-don't
Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

Home Economics The weather has finally changed and we are enjoying cool evenings and warm days. For the next six to eight months we'll be better able to enjoy baked goods without having too much concern over heating our home here in sunny, hot southern Arizona!During this time of year, it is nice to make the applesauce and bake bread and winter squash, as it warms the house nicely on the crisp mornings. During the summer, it is an absolute necessity to do so in the morning (with the windows open) so the heat has a chance to dissipate before the hot sun heats everything around us and requires additional energy usage to 'cool' the heat created by the oven and stove.
We find the following activities work well in the weekend mornings:
- coring apples and making applesauce
- baking Lois Lang's nut bread
- baking winter squash
We find the following activities work well in the evenings:
- heating and cooling milk and then fermenting in the Yogourmet for 24 hours (so it goes into the refrigerator the following evening and is ready to eat the next morning)
- dripping yogurt (it is completely dripped by morning)
What do you do to make the SCD easier for you?Breakfast: homemade yogurt, applesauce, and Lois Lang's nut bread.

Shortsightedness.
Monkey-see-monkey-don't.
Dinner, yesterday @ Thunder Canyon Brewery, game 5 of the World Series: tossed salad with a lame Caesar salad dressing, cheeseburger, onion rings, and a pint of obsidian porter. What the heck, right? Wrong. I didn't sleep well and woke with a bunch of diarrhea a few times. By morning I was empty. I feel a little tired but otherwise I don't think there was any long-term damage, just a clear reminder of how the SCD works for me and why I maintain it and shouldn't make such gross transgressions. :-)

Wow, we've been busy! Starting with Thursday after work, we've spent every free minute at home preparing to repaint the interior of our house (everything except the bedrooms and bathrooms). We bought miles of blue tape, plastic sheeting, dropcloth, and masking tape. We protected the lamps, the cabinets, the doors, the windows, the floor, the countertop. Everything is covered in plastic. Then we rented an air sprayer, hooked it up to our 5-gallons of VOC-free paint from Sherwin-Williams, and sprayed away. We ran out of paint about 1/3 of the way through because the calculator on the Home Depot site was wrong. So we were unable to finish as planned and ended up staying with Laura's parents on Saturday night. Sunday we waited for the paint store to re-open, bought more paint, and finished the job with 5 minutes to spare to return the cleaned sprayer to HD! Whew!
So, how to maintain SCD legal food when one's kitchen is covered in plastic and wet paint? First, you put a bunch of stuff in a cooler (with ice) in the garage, for easy access. Almond bread, homemade yogurt, fruit, cheese. I had dinner out two nights in a row; lamb shashlik at Laura's parents' on Saturday and some veal with tomato and pine nuts over a bed of spinach last evening.
