Nirvana of Peristalsis

(also known as Mike's Flog)

A Regimen for Remission
This log tracks my regimen of attitude, exercise, stress management, and SCD foods. Since I started this regimen in 1997, I've been able to keep my Crohn's in a drug-free remission.

Monkey-see,
monkey-don't

Even though I may have experimented beyond the SCD from time to time, one must remember that everyone is different. Follow the intro diet for 3-5 days, and stick with the SCD until you are completely symptom free for at least one year before experimenting.

Steven Wright, on his hometeam Boston Red Sox (from an interview by Cathalena Burch in the Arizona Daily Star): "It's like being in a Charles Dickens book. New England is like 10 million Oliver Twists," he explains of his lifelong devotion to the losing baseball team. "It's a battle of the reality of the situation against your inner human instinct of optimism. That's what it is every year. The human spirit has an incredible hope and optimism in it. Then every year it's smashed out. The Yankees are the speed of light, and the Red Sox are the speed of sound. And that's all there is to it, really. But your instinct is hoping that this year, sound will go faster than light."

I got another email address today, woohoo! Blogger/Google invited me to try GMail, and I couldn't pass it up. Stay tuned on how cool (or uncool) it is.

Dinner: grilled halibut in a roasted red pepper, grilled onion, garlic, and tomato coulis of my own invention, leftover grilled patty pan squash, snap peas with onion.

Lunch: spicy tuna roll from Sushi Savvy. No, rice is not SCD legal so don't eat sushi, got it?

Breakfast: homemade yogurt with some flax seed oil, Lois Lang's nut bread with honey.

We've been having a lot of fun with Mexican food lately!

Dinner: The highlight of dinner was Laura's SCD modification of Jim Peyton's soup recipe for cream of avocado with tequila. Delicious! Basically, fresh sqeezed orange juice, homemade chicken stock, fresh cilantro, a roasted chile pepper, a dash of tequila, and garnish of cumin and paprika (it is plenty creamy without the cream the recipe calls for).

Dinner: I started cooking at 3PM and we sat down to eat at 6PM. I had never made a mole before so I decided to try one today. It is a fairly elaborate process and it came out very well! It involves blackening some tomatoes, carmelizing onions and garlic, toasting pipians, cooking dried chili peppers in a chicken broth, and then blending everything together (this is by no means a complete listing of the ingredients). Laura really liked the sauce but I would prefer that it tasted a bit less of pipians so I will work on that for next time. Anyway, I made it without chocolate and used some honey and extra cinnamon instead. So, dinner: chicken with a red mole sauce, grilled patty pan squash, grilled snap peas with onions.

Lunch: leftover stuffed chiles, hazelnut cookies, Michelle's cake.

This month's meeting of the Tucson Intestinal Health Support Group: an afternoon food exchange! Seven people attended and we had quite a food fest, sharing food, stories, and SCD recipes. We started off with my gazpacho. We then proceeded to Allen's chicken chile rellenos, Gloria's fruit and cheese, and Irene & Igor's hazelnut cookies with a blackberry fruit spread. Dessert items included Michelle's chocolate cake (no chocolate but it sure tasted like it) and some strawberry frozen yogurt.

Dinner: grilled tuna, sautee of scallions and radishes, sauteed bok choy with ginger.

Breakfast: homemade yogurt, a Braeburn apple, Lois Lang's bread with butter and honey. Lately I'm finding I prefer chilled Fuji apples for breakfast. I ran out of Fuji's, and thus, the Braeburn.
